The Azores, Portugal is an archipelago made up of 9 islands. They have a surface area of about 2400 kms2 and it´s capital is on the biggest and most populated island of Sao Miguel. Sao Miguel Island, Faial, Pico, Graciosa, Corbo, Terciera, Santa Maria, Flores and Sao Jorge are the nine portuguese islands known as the Azores, Portugal.
They are volcanic islands with recent eruptions like the one in 1957 in the Island of Faial. They have an incredible marine fauna with abundant vegetation. The capital of these islands is Ponta Delgada located on the island of Sao Miguel where 50% of a population of 250,000 resides.
The islands closest to the mainland of Portugal are Sao Miguel and Santa Maria, while Flores and Corvo are the furthest. Terceira, Pico, Faial, Graciosa and Sao Jorge are the ones that are the most centrally located.
