Monuments
São muitos os monumentos que a história deixou nesta região, neste arquipélago dos Açores.

The history of the Azores in Portugal began being written when the portuguese sailor Diogo de Silves discovered the archipelago in the 15th century. The name Azores comes from Azor the name of a bird prey that is said to glide around these lands, even though it still has not been been proven.

In the XV century the Azore Islands were not inhabited, for this reason they are called the legendary and mythic islands, names like the Atlantida or the Azuis islands or Seven cities were given to these deserted islands. After the 15th century when the first boats arrived the history changed, and the islands began to be populated after the expeditions of the first portuguese sailors. Diogo de Silves was the man in charge of opening the doors to other sailors that arrived in the Algarve in the region of Alentejo on the Portuguese Penninsula that colonized this region. French, Dutch and Spaniards came afterwards, but not in vain the waters of the Azores, precisely the Terceira Island, were witnesses to the most important battles in the sea, like the Batalla de Terceira between spanish and french.

In the 19th century with the portuguese civil war, the Islands were a bit shakey and a great instability was created. Vila da Praia was witness to a battle that the liberal won against the absolutists, causing Terceira island to be used as a place for the Portuguese Regimen.

In the 20th century in the year 1976 the Azores formed part of the autonomous region formed by the island of Sao Miguel, where Ponta Delgada is lcoated, the capital of the Azores and the most populated. It has a population of almost 130,000. Terceira Islands has 60,000 inhabitants, Sao Jorge Islands has 15,000 more or less, Santa Maria a little over 600, Graciosa, Flores have about 5,000 and Corbo Islands has 1000.
